@PapercupGTI

@PapercupGTI was an experimental Instagram page about my Volkswagen GTI with a unique "Jazz solo cup" livery. My main purpose of this page was to see how fast I could grow a following in a niche environment. The other purpose of the page was to allow me to get creative with social media. It allowed me to branch into more photography and video, while also allowing me to experiment with organic and paid advertising methods.

The Instagram page was launched in April 2020 under the name "DBABY_MK6", a nod to an old nickname and the Mark 6 generation of the Golf GTI. My GTI, however, had seen better days—its clear coat was peeling, and the paint needed serious attention. Initially, I planned to wrap the entire car in a fresh new color, but after getting an eye-watering quote, that idea quickly changed. Instead, I drew inspiration from the iconic Jazz Solo Cup pattern I had seen on a few other cars and realized my hot hatch was the perfect candidate for it.

Photography and video

Used DSLR cameras with various lenses, as well as my iPhone with a gimbal, to capture dynamic photos and videos of my car in different scenes and locations. I then edited them to enhance the visuals before sharing

Graphic Design

Designed the livery to spec in Illustrator, had it printed on vehicle vinyl material, and applied it to the car for a custom look. Additionally, I created specialty graphics for posts to enhance the Instagram page’s content and visual appeal.

Social Media Management

Managed the Instagram account by creating weekly content, engaging with the car community to drive growth, and experimenting with paid advertising to reach a wider audience and boost engagement.

The Process:

The car was measured, at which point I made the graphics in Adobe Illustrator to size, and sent the file to a printshop to be printed on layered vinyl. Once printed, I called up my buddy Chris, and we got to work applying the livery and transforming the car.

Filmed and edited this video with my friends Lexus. Shot on an iPhone 11 with a handheld gimbal, and edited using Adobe Premiere Pro.

Key Takeaways

Consistent Posting

Posting regularly (2-3 times/week) helped influence growth.

Engagement with the community

Commenting, liking, following, and interacting with other car pages drove more eyes and followers to the page.

Hashtags & Tagging

Using the right hashtags and tagging accounts helps gain viewership and potential for collaboration.

Paid Advertising

Experimenting with "boosting" posts to gain more traction, likes, comments, and followers.

In Conclusion...

Going from 0 to 800+ followers in about 2 years (April 2020 to August 2022) is a decent growth rate, especially for a niche account like a car page. It’s not viral-level growth, but it’s solid organic growth, especially when most of the followers were real, engaged car enthusiasts rather than bots or inactive accounts.
